Madaba & Mount Nebo Tour
About This Tour
Half an hour southwest of Amman lie two of the most significant sites in the Christian world — and this private half-day tour covers both without rushing. In Madaba, the City of Mosaics, your guide takes you into the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George to see the famous 6th-century Madaba Map: two million tesserae forming the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land, with Jerusalem, the Dead Sea and the Jordan River all clearly labeled in Byzantine Greek. We also visit a working mosaic workshop where artisans keep the 1,500-year-old craft alive.
From Madaba it's a ten-minute drive to Mount Nebo, the windswept summit where, according to the Bible, Moses looked out over the Promised Land he would never enter. On a clear day the view sweeps across the Jordan Valley to the Dead Sea, Jericho and even the towers of Jerusalem. The modern Memorial Church of Moses shelters some of Jordan's finest Byzantine floor mosaics, and the iconic Brazen Serpent sculpture marks the summit. The tour works beautifully as a first-day introduction to Jordan or combined with a Dead Sea afternoon — ask us and we'll tailor it.
