Madaba + Mount Nebo + Baptism Site Tour
About This Tour
This is the classic pilgrimage day through Jordan's biblical heartland, and it flows beautifully from hilltop to river valley. We begin in Madaba, the City of Mosaics, where the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George shelters the famous 6th-century Madaba Map — two million tesserae forming the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land. Ten minutes on, Mount Nebo rises above the Jordan Valley: the summit where, according to scripture, Moses looked out over the Promised Land. On a clear day the panorama sweeps across the Dead Sea to Jericho and the hills of Jerusalem.
From Nebo we descend nearly a kilometer in altitude to Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Your visit winds past excavated Byzantine churches, ancient baptism pools and hermit caves to the reed-lined banks of the Jordan River itself — one of the most moving places in the Holy Land regardless of your faith. Pilgrims who wish to enter the river at the designated baptism area can do so; tell us in advance and we help arrange a ceremony. By late afternoon we return you to your Amman hotel with three of Christianity's greatest sites behind you in a single unhurried day.
