🌿 Dead Sea & Jordan Valley Hiking
About This Adventure
The Jordan Valley drops from the highlands of Amman to the Dead Sea — 430 m below sea level — through a series of seasonal wadis that fill with winter run-off and dry to beautiful carved limestone canyons by spring. The hiking here is different from anywhere else: you are literally descending below sea level, the air thickens, and the landscape shifts from scrubby Mediterranean hillside to subtropical valley.
Wadi Zarqa Ma'in leads to hot spring waterfalls that pour directly into a cold canyon river — one of Jordan's stranger natural attractions. Wadi Mujib (the "Grand Canyon of Jordan") offers canyon hikes and the famous Siq Trail canyoning route. The nature reserves around the Dead Sea hold flamingo populations in winter along the saline evaporation ponds.
The sense of elevation loss is disorienting and oddly euphoric; your ears pop descending into the valley, and the pressure difference is enough to affect some hikers' breathing until they acclimatise.

Weather Warning
Flash floods are the primary hazard in winter and spring — slot canyon hikes (Mujib Siq Trail) are closed when rain is forecast anywhere upstream, even if the sky above you is blue. Slippery limestone after rain is a genuine ankle-breaker. Summer valley temperatures at sea level exceed 45°C, while the altitude difference between valley floor and rim creates rapid weather changes. Always check the Jordan RSCN site for current trail status before visiting.
