About This Adventure

Sandboarding is not particularly technical: you strap a board to your feet, stand at the top of a dune, and attempt to arrive at the bottom while still upright. The success rate is highly variable. The sand is red, fine-grained Wadi Rum desert sand that is both softer than snow (the falls do not hurt much) and significantly harder to walk back up.

Boards are usually flat-bottomed wooden or fibreglass decks waxed on the bottom. Wadi Rum's dune system has slopes ranging from gentle learning gradients to longer, steeper runs that can generate real speed — especially in early morning when the sand is firm.

The activity pairs naturally with a jeep safari: guides stop at the main dune field as part of the tour, boards are in the back of the jeep, and twenty minutes of sandboarding breaks up the driving with maximum entertainment value.

Weather Warning

Summer sand surface temperatures at Wadi Rum exceed 70°C — contact with bare skin causes instant burns; never touch the surface with exposed hands or arms in summer. The sand is fine enough to enter every body orifice: sunglasses, a buff over the nose, and a hat are essential. Sand in the eyes is painful and temporarily blinding; keep goggles handy.
