Hidden in a rugged canyon 264 meters below sea level, between Madaba's plateau and the Dead Sea shore, steaming waterfalls pour down cliffs of dark basalt into emerald pools — a sight so improbable in the surrounding desert that Ma'in feels like a mirage. The springs (Hammamat Ma'in in Arabic) are fed by winter rains that percolate deep underground, are heated by lava fissures, and re-emerge at up to 63°C, cascading over the canyon walls in more than sixty separate springs.

People have soaked here for millennia. Herod the Great crossed from his fortress at Machaerus to take these waters for his ailments, and Roman and Byzantine bathers followed; the tradition never stopped, and today Jordanian families and international travelers share the public hot waterfall pools, while a resort and spa built into the canyon offers private thermal pools, hammams and treatments beneath the falls. The water's mix of sodium, calcium, magnesium and radon-free minerals is credited with easing joint, skin and circulation complaints — but you don't need a diagnosis to enjoy standing under a naturally hot waterfall in a desert gorge.

Ma'in sits 30 minutes from Madaba and 30 from the Dead Sea, making it the wellness link in the Jordan Valley circuit: Mount Nebo's views, Madaba's mosaics, a thermal soak, and a Dead Sea float can all fit in one indulgent day.

How to Visit

Ma'in is an easy add-on to any Dead Sea or Madaba itinerary — around 90 minutes from Amman. Ask us to include the hot springs in a private Dead Sea day or a custom wellness tour; we arrange entrance, timing and, if you wish, spa reservations at the canyon resort.
