Aqaba is possibly the world's only place where you can look at four countries simultaneously from a jet ski: Jordan under your feet, Saudi Arabia to the south, Egypt to the southwest and Israel to the northwest. That's either deeply inspiring or deeply distracting — probably both.

The bay is sheltered enough for beginners to get comfortable quickly, and wide enough for experienced riders to open up the throttle on open water. Rental centres along the southern beach strip offer solo or tandem skis by the half-hour.

Best sessions: early morning before the wind picks up and before the sun turns the air into a pizza oven. Helmets and life jackets are mandatory at reputable operators.
