'And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo... and the Lord shewed him all the land.' For three thousand years, pilgrims have climbed this windswept ridge above the Jordan Valley to stand where Deuteronomy places the final scene of Moses' life — gazing across the Promised Land he was never to enter. The view remains Scripture made visible: the Dead Sea glinting 1,200 meters below, the green ribbon of the Jordan River, the oasis of Jericho, and on clear days the towers of Jerusalem on the far horizon.

Christians built a sanctuary here as early as the 4th century, and the modern Memorial Church of Moses, beautifully restored and reopened in 2016, shelters its successors' floors — some of Jordan's finest Byzantine mosaics, including a celebrated 6th-century hunting-and-pastoral scene signed by its three craftsmen. Outside, Giovanni Fantoni's Brazen Serpent monument twists bronze into a serpent-cross, fusing Moses' bronze serpent with the Crucifixion. Pope John Paul II began his Jubilee pilgrimage here in 2000, planting an olive tree for peace; Pope Benedict XVI followed in 2009.

Mount Nebo is a place of quiet power rather than grand scale — a short visit, but one that stays with travelers of every faith. It sits ten minutes from Madaba and forty from the Baptism Site, anchoring Jordan's biblical circuit.
